How To Wear A Blazer This Fall

How To Wear A Blazer This Fall

Blazers are a fashion essential these days. You’ll find blazers that are oversized, cropped, double-breasted, single-buttoned, structured, knit, and more! So what should you buy and how should you wear a blazer this fall? It depends on your personal style, body type and your lifestyle. I explain more in this post…

How To Wear The Classic Fall Blazer

Suit Blazers

Let’s start with the classic look; a double-breasted, hip-length blazer. This style works for most body types and can be dressed up or down. The Siena Wool Blazer from Banana Republic is a great example of a classic blazer that you can pair with matching pants, a skirt, a sheath dress or jeans.

I’m wearing the Modern Wool Blazer from Banana Republic. I’m wearing the size 4, but it feels a little too oversized so I’ve ordered the size 2. It’s a heavier blazer made in (mostly) recycled wool. It does come with a matching skirt but it is quite short (17″). My favorite way to wear this blazer style is with boot-cut pants or jeans. It’s cut generously I have room to wear a t-shirt now and a sweater when it’s colder.

Captain’s Blazer

Another classic blazer style is the (nautical) captain’s blazer, a double-breasted structured blazer with gold buttons. Take a look at J.Crew’s Bristol Blazer in Lilac Herringbone. Or, if you prefer a neutral, try Banana Republic’s Captain’s Blazer. Wear these to work or dinner with classic wool pants. On casual days, switch to straight-leg jeans.

The Most Fashion-Forward Blazers This Fall

Oversized Blazer

Want to wear your fall blazer like a celebrity or influencer? Then, wear an oversized blazer as a dress. (You can see how Hailey Bieber does it in this post). If you want a more modest version of this influencer look, try an oversized blazer with a mini dress or skirt.

Leather Blazer

This 90s Longline Leather Blazer would look gorgeous with a fitted mini-dress and boots. Take a look at my A Simple Outfit Formula With Knee-high Boots for a similar outfit with a coat. (Remember, mini doesn’t have to mean thigh-high. My version of mini is a dress that is an inch or two above my knees).

Blazer Dress

You can also wear a slightly longer blazer dress like this fall plaid Sarta Blazer Dress. For a night out, around the holidays, take a look at this Sequin Blazer Dress.

Barbie Core Blazer Outfit

Loving Barbiecore? This Willa Blazer has matching pants for a head-to-toe pink outfit!

Where To Buy Athleisure Or Casual Blazers

Boxy Casual Blazers
If you live in jeans and sweaters, you may want a casual unstructured blazer like this Oversized Blazer or this Corduroy ’80s Blazer from Everlane. If you’re petite, these may be a bit overwhelming on you so consider sizing down.

Knit Blazers And Sweater Blazers

Do you prefer athleisure? Then, try a knit blazer like this Knit Corduroy Blazer. It will elevate your activewear outfit but keep you comfy in stretch corduroy.

J.Crew always has a number of sweater blazers but they tend to be too long for my 5’4″ frame. If you’re taller, take a look at their Cecile Relaxed Sweater Blazer. For more affordable options, try J.Crew Factory’s Schoolboy Sweater Blazer or Chelsea Sweater Blazer.

Wear any of these blazers with jeans, flared leggings, or joggers.

Boho And Romantic Blazers

Velvet Blazers

If your style is boho-chic there are plenty of blazer options for you too. Try a Velvet Blazer over drapey wide leg pants. Or try this Rancher Plaid jacket with velvet cuffs over flared jeans.

Tweed Blazers

If you’re a romantic, try a 90s-style tweed blazer like this Chelsee Puff Sleeved Cropped Blazer. Wear it with high waisted jeans, a knee-length dress, or a pencil skirt. If you are petite, a cropped blazer like this is perfect for you!
