Dark brown is one of fashion’s favorite colors this fall and winter. Whether you call it chocolate, mocha, walnut, coffee, or expresso, this rich color is flattering to most skin tones. (Black, on the other hand, can be too harsh, and gray can make you look washed out).
If you tend to suit warmer colors, choose a brown with hints of orange. If you look better in cooler colors, look for a very deep, dark brown with hints of black. Here are some beautiful dark brown fashion pieces available right now, and how to wear them this fall and winter…
Dark Brown Fall And Winter Jackets
A dark brown shirt jacket is a versatile, casual option for warmer fall days. Mine is Banana Republic’s Sweater Shirt Jacket from last year, but Everlane has a very similar Oversized Shirt Jacket that is currently available.
Because my shirt jacket is fairly loose, I’m wearing it with a fitted t-shirt and skinny jeans. As it gets colder, I’m going to switch the t-shirt for a turtleneck, and the jeans for fleece-lined leggings. In the winter, I’ll add an oversized coat on top.
Dark Brown Cozy Knits
Madewell’s Textured Knit Elsmere Pullover is relaxed and cozy. Add some sleek brown ankle boots and you’ll have plenty of options for your other pieces: blue jeans, beige pants, a printed skirt, or black leather pants.
If you want a one-and-done dress, take a look at the Brushed Rib Mockneck Mini Dress by Madewell. Dress it down with lug sole boots (take a look at this post for options) or dress it up with gold statement earrings and heels.
If you’re looking for a cardigan, take a look at this Frill Cuff Knit Cardigan from & Other Stories. You can wear it buttoned up as a sweater, or unbuttoned over a camisole or slip dress.
Brown Corduroy, Velour And Velvet
If you love that 70s style or a loungewear look, here are some corduroy, velour, and velvet items you might like:
J.Crew’s Relaxed Velour Hoodie in Deep Chocolate comes with matching joggers for a cozy loungewear set.
If you prefer more of a rusty brown, take a look at the Corduroy Yorkway Shirt Jacket from Madewell.
Banana Republic has some gorgeous High-Rise Corduroy Straight-Leg Pants in a dark brown with warm olive tones.
Brown Leather
Brown leather can look polished and refined, or rugged and laid-back. If you like a polished professional style, look for a glossy finish, snakeskin, or croc-effect leather.
Brown Printed Options
If you’re not sure if brown fits into your current closet, start with a print that is a combination of brown and other colors that you wear. I recently bought a printed maxi skirt that includes a brown that’s just a little too close to my skin tone. But the print includes plenty of black and lavender (colors that do work for my skin tone) that I can wear with the skirt.
I also have a brown paisley print dress that I often wear for dinners and parties in the fall and winter. This Ruffle Midi Wrap Dress from & Other Stories has a similar feel and would be perfect for an elegant Thanksgiving dinner.
A print is an easy way to start your outfit. Simply match one or two of the colors in your print for your coordinating pieces.
This Rebecca Taylor silk printed dress would be gorgeous for a fall wedding or formal dinner. There are hints of pink and blue in this print that would be fun colors for accessories.
Colors To Wear With Dark Brown
So what do you wear with dark brown? Cream, beige, denim, olive, gold, and black are no-brainers, but if you’re feeling adventurous, try a pastel or bright color. Here are a few combinations that I’m loving right now:
