Silk (or satin) slip dresses have been trending for a few years. But, for some of us, the plunging necklines, clingy fabric, and side slits were a little too much like lingerie. This fall, I’m seeing some square neck midi slip dress options that are more wearable. Here’s the one that I bought, and how I’m styling it…
Here’s why I think it’s more wearable than the usual v-neck slip dress:
- The square neck is more modest and bra-friendly than the plunging neckline of most slip dresses.
- It comes in Hunter Green and Hyper Navy, colors that are less common in lingerie than black, nude, or pink.
- It has a straight shape which leaves room for wider hips or a belly. Traditional slip dresses are curved to cling to the body.
- The straps adjust with a self-tie, instead of the tiny buckles that you find on lingerie.
- The silk fabric is a little heavier than the traditional silk slip dresses.
5 Ways To Wear A Square Neck Midi Slip Dress
So how do you wear a slip dress? The short answer: many different ways, from casual to cocktail! The slightly longer answer: see below!
1. For Dinner
On a warm day or when you’re inside, the square neck midi slip dress is the epitome of quiet luxury. Add some heels, simple jewelry, and your favorite makeup look.
2. For Weddings And Events
To dress up your midi silk dress for a wedding or cocktail party, add metallic accessories and a cashmere wrap (both trending this season).
My wrap is the J.Crew Oversized Cashmere Wrap in ivory. I love that it’s lightweight but warm.
My gold clutch is this Embossed Foldover Clutch. It’s affordable, roomy, and versatile (with a chain strap that you can tuck away).
My earrings are probably from about ten years ago! I wear this type of drop earrings a lot so I’m looking at these gold and silver ones as a second option.
3. For Cocktail Parties
I often see slip dresses worn with heels, but I’m here to tell you that you can wear flats too. In fact, ballerina and Mary Jane flats are trending right now. I’m wearing mine with my Sarah Flint Natalie flats which I wrote about in this post: My Sarah Flint Natalie Flats Review. Add a cropped cardigan for warmth.
4. For A Casual Event
I love sweaters and slip skirts outfits, but I figured that with a slip dress, I would be able to recreate the same look. My cashmere sweater was previously gifted by the brand Mot & Bow. This Nordstrom Signature one is similar.
5. For The Holidays
Christmas is just a few months away so I’m already planning holiday party outfits. I love the way this green looks with black and a touch of burgundy. (If you buy the blue version, you can wear it with black and burgundy too).
My clutch is currently available in Emerald, Gold, and Opal. If you buy a jeweled clutch like this, just be careful to not snag your dress on it!
